1) XP Key Invalid

Trayon5 wrote - I'm doing a clean reinstall XPpro SP2 but setup says my prod key is invalid. I have the cd and prod key sticker but no luck. Obviously XP was valid just a couple of days ago. HP workstation xw8000

Bruce C. replied:
You need to examine the Product Key very carefully. It's awfully easy to mistake a "B" for an "8," a "G" for a "6," an "S" for a "5," or a "Q" for a "0" or "O." Fortunately, Microsoft had the good sense to leave the "1's," "I's," "O's," and "0's" out of the equation. Also, be sure that your is _off_ while entering the Product Key -- this isn't supposed to make a difference, but I've seen it do so, on rare occasions.

***As aside, if during the install windows wont see your keystrokes when its time to enter in the key than use/try a different keyboard.

2) PrtScn

Mindy asked - I'm trying to make a copy of the screen but I have tried hitting the print screen key and ALT + print screen but nothing works. Any suggestions?

*** The print screen key in modern computers does NOT print the screen. It merely copies the file to memory, aka "the clipboard". One can then open up just about any common program to view the "screen print" by pasting it, [very often, edit, paste]. I like to modify the print before I use it for whatever, even if sending via email; eg perhaps I want to shrink it. I use the apps. below:

Often I save the file as both a .jpg and a .gif and see which looks best.

3) Install From Scratch

Martin C. said - I am planning on starting a new PC build and will be re-installing XP Home from scratch it was starting to get a bit clogged and slow. I am fairly sure how to backup all the things I need, but I was not sure what to do about my kid's MSN accounts.

*** I would install everything from scratch. I would hope that you already have your most important file folders on a several CDs. Often it is the case that you find out how many useless and/or unneeded programs you have had clogging up the works. This also gives you the chance to verify any passwords and/or usernames that you use and need to write down for safe keeping as a PC is NOT the place to safe keep important information.

########################################
4) Blocked Sites

Herbert C. asked - Recently, I notice that some sites seem to be blocked without my intending to do it. How can I go about to check what is wrong with my computer? I am using Symantec Norton Internet Security 2006 or 2007 (the one with yellow icons and edges).

*** Very first step is to get rid of NIS, ASAP. This is a very common problem with NIS. Removal tools here, but first try uninstalling it using Add/Remove:

5) Task Manager Items

didee58 wrote - Is there a site where I can find out what all the Task manager names mean-I know what a lot of them are just by deduction but some "no clue". Alos is there a reason I have 4 srchost-2 say system,2-say network service? Can some of the programs running that are not system be turned off to make for faster speed. And if you do where do they go it you need them again. I know some of you must think, dummy, but if you don't ask you don't know.

*** For starters, it's perfectly OK and by design that you will have multiple instances of svchost.exe running.
