HouseCall FAQ

Q. How often do you publish HouseCall?

A. Housecall is normally published about 2 times per month, sometimes many more, sometimes much less. However there is no set minimum number of monthly mailings as sometimes there just isn't any interesting new news that is applicable to the majority of my readers. Or quite often I'm involved in a huge project at work for maybe weeks or a month at a time and/or temporarily disabled and I simply dont have the extra time to research and create new issues.

Q. How do I ask a question that will appear in HouseCall?

A. Questions and answers for HouseCall are compiled using various resources unrelated to, and independent of the bootdisk.com website. The reason for this is to provide content that is more universal than what I'd see from just the users of this site. In other words I cant direct you to a specific source to ask a question so that it will appear in the publication.

Q. How can I make a comment to you regarding a current article I have just read?

A. Just follow this protocol:

1. Send in plain text only and do NOT include any attachments. Send links instead.
2. My email address is . Or can have it by hitting the email link at the bottom of the page HERE.

My readers sometimes email me with a constructive comment on a previous article and their comments often appear in the next issue or so.

Q. I stopped getting HouseCall but when I resign up it says I'm already subscribed. What's the deal?

A1. The mail service you are using may be using a filter that is affecting my services mail. You may have to disable that tweak for a week or so and allow my mail to get through. Or, you have set up filters on your email client which prevents mail from bootlistmail@yahoo.com from getting past the filter.

Or, another way is to set your client to allow mail from my return address ie bootlistmail@yahoo.com to get past your filters.

A2. Or, the mailbox for the address you used is filled up or disabled.

Q. My email address has changed. What do I do to continue my subscription?

A. Just sign up again with your new address using the sign-up forms on any of the site's primary pages. It's usually in the right-hand column. You many also cancel the mailing to your old address by using the unsubscribe link at the bottom of every issue. Or, you can use the link at the bottom of every issue to change your address.

Q. Where do you get your questions and answers from?

A. A number of sources. Phone calls, on-site appointments, several USEnet groups, email, customers in the office, or sometimes just discovering something new and interesting while fixing a pc.

Q. I have no filters set yet I cant get HouseCall. It seems to be blocked.

A. The mail service I use [ymlp.com aka yourmailinglistprovider.com] sends from the following IP addresses:

217.71.120.155 and 217.71.120.156

If your ISP has these blocked aka blackballed aka blacklisted then ask them to re-enable them.

Q. I want to cancel my subscription. How do I do that?

A. At the bottom of every issue there is a link to unsubscribe. It always works. So if you want to cancel the mailing to an email address, just click the unsubscibe link at the bottom of the issue when you receive the mailing at the address you no longer want.

Q. I am having trouble signing up. I put in my email address but I never get any issues.

A. When you sign up a confirmation email is sent from my mailing service which you have to click on the confirmation link within to complete the process. This is so people cant sign up people who dont want the publication. If you are using one of those [user validation] services you wont get the confirmation email [double opt-in] because no human is involved in the process.

So, sign with an email address that doesn't require human confirmation.

Q. I want to get HouseCall in HTML.

A. That's a special service which is available for an $20 fee. Click HERE to subscribe. The subscription to the HTML version does not have an expiration date.

Q. For no reason my issues stopped coming to me. Why?

A. My mailing service has two types of [bounce] handling features set up. They are called Hard Bounce and Soft Bounce. A Hard bounce is when the mail gets returned when the mailbox doesn't exist. The email address is removed from the list. A Soft bounce is when the mail gets returned for a "mailbox full" or "server problem" etc. After two soft bounces the email address is removed.

One could always set up an account at Yahoo or whatever to get HouseCall in addition to your primary address. You may subscribe to the list with as many email addresses as you want.

Q. Do you use the email addresses for any other reason?

A. No. I hate spam and so does my mailing service. My account would be instantly deleted if I used the list for any other reason other than for HouseCall .

Q. I'm getting multiple copies of the newsletter mailed to me but I only want one.

A. Most likely, you've signed up more than once using different email addresses and then set one of the addresses to forward mail to your main primary account.
