www.bootdisk.com Note that your hard drive has to be partitioned and formatted first before you use this utility. It also has to be made bootable by using the sys c: command using a standard bootdisk for the OS you want to install. Set your pc to boot from the floppy drive first and insert this disk and power on. The setup program will start automatically. A short message will appear for you to read so just Press any key to continue . . . as prompted. A second message will appear when the setup is finished. Just Press any key to continue . . . After finishing remove the disk and set your hard drive to boot from C: first. You will be presented with a menu of 4 cdrom driver choices. Option 1 works 99% of the time. If not, then just reboot the PC and try the second driver, etc. After booting up to C:, note that your CDrom drive will be R:, or R: and S: if you have 2 drives. If installing Windows 9X put in your Windows CD, go to the R: drive and type setup.exe If installing Windows XP, put in the XP CD BEFORE you start your PC then go to r: and navigate to the i386 folder and type winnt.exe to start installing XP. After windows is loaded one of the first things you want to do is to either delete config.sys and autoexec.bat or rem out the real mode CDrom drivers and mscdex.exe This is because Windows will supply its own cdrom drivers once its installed and/or the DOS drivers may interfere with the normal operation of your drives once Windows is running. You can use Edit or Notepad to disable the CDrom driver lines in config.sys and autoexec.bat For example, in the config.sys on the hard drive you'll see lines like: DEVICE=c:\utils\cd1.sys /D:tomato To disable it use the rem instert as follows: rem DEVICE=c:\utils\cd1.sys /D:tomato For Windows 98/ME and XP one can just delete both config.sys and autoexec.bat after the OS is done installing.
