2) Free unRAR

dai.ode posted - Is there such thing as a free unRAR for Win XP I can download?

CoMa answered:

ExtractNow:

*** Also: http://www.pewtersoftware.com/ Note that .rar files are often damaged during download. So, create a new folder, empty internet cache and tem/temp files, and try again.

Tried a few and the best (so far) is Universal Extractor for versatility and usability.

3) New "Best" Free Software Firewall

It's been quite a while since I've researched software firewalls. I am looking for suggesstions for free ones which are easy to configure and that I can publish in my newsletter and homepage.

*** Its best just to get a modern router to address incoming "bad" traffic.

4) Domain Niggles

I recently went to visit a website I've done business with in the past and wanted to do more business with only to find it's now just one of those generic web hosting link pages. It turns out that the owner of the site failed to renew the domain and it was registered by somebody else almost immediately. This has been on my mind since so I thought I'd say a few things regarding such.

Yes my readers are from novice to expert so please take this into account when reading the following advice/hints from my experience. This is in no particular order.

When I first registered bootdisk.com back in 1998 it cost me $75/year to keep a domain registered. Big money so I was in no rush to register other names. However, a Rutgers college student named Uriah who worked for my dial up ISP part time said I should also register the .net and the the .org as he was a fan of my bootdisk project. Although I waited for a bit before I did I am glad that I registered the other two names a few months later. In other words, if you are looking to register a new domain name and may be looking for it to bring you some traffic or income in the future I suggest that you also register the .net and the .org. You can always let the .net and .org expire if your plans change.

Yes its true that most domain registrars will send you a notice if your domain is about to expire. But, your personal information may have changed. Your ISP or your email service may be out of business, or, your credit card info may be out of date if you are set to auto-renew. Or your email service may be tagging the notice(s) from your registrar as spam so you will never see them. Or, your physical snail address may have changed so you may never get a renewal letter. Check with your registrar to make sure your info is up to date, and renew your "important" domains for 5 years just to be safe.

For example, we never expect it, but you never know when you can end up in a hospital for an extended amount of time or whatever. Domain names are NOT property you own, ie one may only "rent" them from a registrar for a limited time period. In fact there are many services now that offer RSS feeds that you can subscribe with that will tell you when a particular domain that you may "want" is up for grabs.

Dont be afraid of long domain names. A domain name that is descriptive of what you do may be better than one that doesn't. For example, it was easy for me to remember yourmailinglistprovider.com from the start and I've been doing this newsletter since 2000. It was two years later when yourmailinglistprovider.com also registered ymlp.com as again, domain names were very expensive then. All the 4 letter domain names are now long gone.

Regarding search engines. Dont waste your money signing up for search engine submissions as they are ignored by the engine authorities. Try to put your business in the domain name and title of the webpage. But, pay the money to "lock" your most important domains. In closing take the time to check out your personal information with your domain registrar and keep it up to date.

6) Reseller Comment

RESELLERS earn 30%-50% on every sale. If you see this, dont waste your time. You will NOT get compensated honestly.

If you want to be a reseller than sell the product from your web page and then send the discounted wholesale price dollars to the owner of the ware or product.
