1) A: Drive Niggle

toshradio asked - Any time I open Wordperfect (or an old version of MS Word) and open folders to start looking for a file to work with, the A: drive activates for a brief moment. If I then quit that document and go back up the directory chain looking for another file to open, it will often make that sound again. I rarely use the A: drive, but do not want to remove it. Is there a way to stop the computer from looking for a disc there when I am looking around for a file within a word processor?

Clear RECENT files

Right click on the Start button.. Choose Customize

click on CLEAR

HeyBub added:
16-bit programs, when looking for a file, cause a scan all available devices.

The easiest fix is to put a blank diskette in the drive.

2) Spontaneous Rebooting

jamie3498 posted - I have a 6-year old P4 1.6 running Windows XP SP2 with 768 MB RAM. For most of its life, this computer has been very stable. In the last few weeks, I have experienced three spontaneous re-boots. In the middle of various tasks (no obvious pattern), the computer does a hard reboot (as if I pushed the reset button). I have a Seasonic S12 power supply that I installed 2 years ago, and I've never yet had any trouble with it.

What are likely causes? Does this sound like software or hardware?

*** Overheating most likely. Perhaps a case fan has gone bad. Or your power supply fan has gone bad. Or your CPU fan has gone bad.

5) View Background Processes

Marsha asked - When it sounds like your computer is working in the background. How do you locate what program is causing it to sound like that?

Ed Metcalfe said:
I'd start with Task Manager and look for high CPU utilization. Better still download Process Explorer:

If nothing is showing high CPU usage then disc usage is the next thing to look for. Process Monitor is my favorite utility for this:

Rich adds: Try filemon:
