1) Dual Boot Situation

colinlam asked - Hi, I have three partitions, XP Pro on the first, Vista on the second and my data on the third. The problem I am having is accessing the data from either OP. If I change ownership in one and then the other I cannot open files from the first and have to take ownership again. I have had this system running OK for months but have had to reinstall when the motherboard blew and cannot get it running for the life of me.

Ron M. answered:
For dual boot situations involving XP and Vista I always recommend that a third party Boot Manager program such as BootIt Next Generation (www.bootitng.com) be used and that it be configured so that the non-booting operating system partitions are hidden.

This is generally a good idea with all Windows multi-boot situations but it is especially important with Windows XP and Vista as Windows XP will destroy the System Restore information on the Windows Vista partition if it is allowed to access it.

2) .net Framework Question

Dennis inquired - I have Widows XP SP2 and IE7. What version of .Net Framework should I have? Should I have more than one version?

Detlev Dreyer replied:
Neither WinXP SP2 nor IE7 needs the .NET Framework. If there is no software installed which requires .NET Framework, you do not need *any* version.

Gary S. said:
While Detlev is technically correct, I find it easier to install all .Net frameworks (1.1, 2 and 3), just in case some app I try needs it. Better than taking another hour to stop everything else I'm doing an install the needed Framework. Note that .Net apps use Frameworks 1.1, 2 or 3 (or, perhaps more than one.) If an app requires 1.1, having 3 installed will not help (and vice versa, of course.) The later versions do not replace the earlier ones.

3) Old Drivers

T5 wrote - I have a Sony VGN-A617B Laptop running XP Home, I have noticed that a lot of my drivers are quite old, i checked with driver agent and I am running 50% bad drivers but win update doesn't download updated drivers and the drivers that driver agent recommends don't work either. What should I do?

*** If it isn't broke, dont fix it no matter how old your drivers are. And, you are probably most lucky that the drivers update didn't work. In other words, dont let MS update any of your drivers if you are not having a problem with them, and anyway, if you _are_ having a problem with a driver dont get the update from MS, get it from the card and/or your computer maker.

4) Resize Image For Emailing

Kirk posted - Is there a way to compress a photo from its original format to smaller size? I shoot the most of pictures in a large format for printing but once in a while I would like to e-mail them. I know you can reduce the size with outlook under options but this option is not available with other mail programs any ideas?

Nepatsfan responded:
Image Resizer - This PowerToy enables you to resize one or many image files with a right-click.

Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP:

Direct Download of Image Resizer http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/ImageResizerPowertoySetup.exe

*** Other simple non-invasive apps one might want to try:

Also note that after resizing an image, you may save it in a better format for storage and/or sending to somebody vial e-mail as an attachment. The favorites are saving as a .jpg or .gif. Some images will look better in .jpg, some in .gif. Often when I resize an image, I save it in both formats and view them to see which looks the best at the best byte size.

Note that many people around the world are still on dialup Internet and many people in Europe still have to pay by the minute for Internet so it's always best to make your attachments as small as possible.

5) Just For Fun

Just for fun. My son created this:

And he's actually a very good web page designer, and knows PHP and how to use all those functions you may see in CPanel. He can do all those fancy things you may want. He can also do your art, logos, etc. A few of the pages he designed are here:
